Procedure for Obtaining a Driving Record
In some cases it is in the interest of an employer to obtain the driving history of an employee to ensure safety of other employees and to protect their business. Some sites used for clinical or field experiences require that programs obtain driving records on all students having experiences in their facility. A driving history furnished by each state will vary, but typically includes personal identifiers, driving status, license type, and driving restrictions or infractions, if any are on file. A driving record can be obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles. The procedure for obtaining a driving record is found below:
Obtaining Forms:
Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) from the state(s) in which you currently hold a drivers license. Some states require that forms be obtained and sent to the DMV located in the state capital
Once a form is obtained:
- Return it to the address specified for each state with the specified fee (the fee will vary among states)
- Results of driving record from that state will be sent to the individual requesting information or to the person designated
- Allow several weeks for request to be processed
