Applying to Pharmacy School

There are 83 accredited schools of pharmacy in the United States and Puerto Rico. The student should contact the pharmacy school that they hope to enter to learn about entrance requirements and curriculum. Regardless of which professional program a student applies to, the following criteria are evaluated: undergraduate grade point average, residency status, letters of recommendation, results of applicant interviews, and previous experience in health-related extracurricular activities and/or employment experience.

In order to apply to a college of pharmacy you need to have achieved junior standing by completion of 61 semester hours of prepharmacy coursework. A competitive cumulative grade point average is necessary in applying to pharmacy school.

The Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) is a national exam administered three times a year and is designed to measure verbal and quantitative ability, reading comprehension, and biology and chemistry knowledge. For additional information on the PCAT, check with the Center for Prehealth Resources.
