Pre-Veterinary Medicine
To be a competitive applicant you must strive for superior academic achievement, involve yourself in activities and volunteer work which speak of your commitment, and above all else, you must be informed! There is usually a specific entrance exam required by veterinary schools, e.g., the Veterinary College Admission Test (VCAT) or the GRE. Many pre-vet students from the Commonwealth of Virginia attend Virginia Tech as undergraduates. Competitive applicants have a GPA of 3.3, strong entrance exam scores, and years of experience with animals and veterinarians. Over the past few years, more women, but fewer men have been applying to veterinary school; currently more than half of those applying to veterinary school nationwide are women.
Veterinary schools have different requirements for admission and you need to become knowledgeable about individual requirements as soon as possible. You should contact Dr. Christopher Rose for more specific information on coursework at JMU or see the JMU pre-veterinary web site for more information and links to important organizational web pages.
